'Ukulele': What's in a word?

Posted by Jennifer Vyhnak on February 19, 2010 at 11:52 AM

Here's an interesting research find I made relating to the word, 'ukulele'.  I have Cherokee ancestory, and the specific details have become lost over the years.  A couple days ago I found an article on the internet entitled, 'The Seven Ceremonies', by Rob Wood. It was about the seven sacred ceremonies of the Cherokee. I was amazed to learn that in ancient times, 'Uku' was the term for Chief. However, the most interesting part for me was that during the 'Friends Made' Ceremony, the title of 'Uku' meant, 'One who renews heart and body', (Lewis &Kneberg, p. 185).  That fits perfectly with my experience of the wonderful ukulele:-}.  Like I've said before, ukulele is big medicine in these challenging times.  I invite you to join the ukulele revolution and be a part of this great healing energy.
